Spontaneous afterlife: surrealism as translation in Latin American vanguard poetry
Abstract:
This dissertation reconsiders the intersection of the Latin American and French surrealist avant-gardes of the early-to-mid 20th century through the lens of translation. I demonstrate that translation — as textual practice, creative method, poetics of craft, and relational ethics — is inextricable from the way avant-garde poets experimented with language, globalized national literatures, and historicized the task of the modernist poet. Across four chapters, I analyze the adaptation of the concepts of the chance encounter, convulsive beauty, the authorial body and the practice of automatic writing in the poetic works of Chilean Vicente Huidobro, Peruvian César Moro, Argentinian Oliverio Girondo, and Mexican Octavio Paz. This study revises the known surrealist canon and calls for a renewed attention to Latin American poets as self-reflective theorists of their global positionality as cultural translators. This challenges the notion of the Latin American avant-gardes as belated by-products of European formalist production; rather, they are contemporaries and innovators of their European counterparts as they refine surrealism’s most translatable nodes beyond the terms that the French movement established. ; Ph.D. ; Includes bibliographical references
