Social Essentialism in Identity-First and Person-First Language ...

Abstract: Social essentialism is the belief that people in different social groupings, such as race, gender, or disability, are similar due to sharing an underlying essence. Previous research by Rhodes et al. (2012) has demonstrated that generic language (e.g., "Zarpies") leads to higher levels of social essentialism than specific language (e.g., "this Zarpie") or language with no label (e.g., "this one") in both adults and preschool-age children. Social essentialism has also been shown to influence thoughts and beliefs about people with mental illnesses (e.g., Haslam & Ernst, 2002). Social essentialist perspectives are necessary for interacting with people and navigating the world, but these beliefs may also lead to greater discrimination and stigmatization (Mandalaywala et al., 2018).
