However, the proposed etymology and evolution face several insurmountable linguistic obstacles and are contradicted by the chronological and geographical distribution of the variants of the menonym. This paper presents an alternative interpretation of the data and postulates that Αὐδναῖος probably originated in *Ἀϝ(ι)δνά “invisible” or “dark”, an epiclesis of Persephone, to whom the Macedonians consecrated a festival, as well as to Demeter, which in all likelihood took place yearly in early winter. ; D’après l’hypothèse dominante, le nom du troisième mois du calendrier macédonien, Αὐδναῖος, dont les sources anciennes attestent de nombreuses variantes, proviendrait de *Ἀ(ϝ)ιδωναῖος « d’Aïdôneus », adjectif dérivé de Ἀϊδωνεύς, l’une des dénominations homériques d’Hadès. *Ἀ(ϝ)ιδωναῖος aurait connu ensuite plusieurs évolutions phonologiques qui caractérisent les parlers des régions du nord de la Grèce. Or, l’étymologie et le développement proposés se heurtent à des obstacles linguistiques insurmontables, et sont infirmés par la distribution chronologique et géographique des variantes du mènonyme. Cet article présente une nouvelle interprétation des données, en postulant qu’à l’origine de Αὐδναῖος se trouverait *Ἀϝ(ι)δνά « Invisible » ou « Obscure », une épiclèse de Perséphone, que les Macédoniens auraient honorée, ainsi que Déméter, par une fête annuelle se déroulant au début de l’hiver.
