⟨10.3917/ls.173.0059⟩ ; https://www.cairn.info/revue-langage-et-societe-2021-2-page-57.htm (2021)
Abstract: International audience ; In this article, we study video recordings of prenatal ultrasound scans from the perspective of ethnomethodology and conversation analysis (EM/CA). We focus on the sequences of interactional perlustration that relate to the recognition of the sex of the fetus. We show how these sequences can emerge according to two different trajectories, one oriented toward a unilateral discovery of the sex by the expert, the other, more collaborative, toward “seeing together.” These two interactional trajectories express different links between modalities of knowledge, frameworks of participation, and ways of coupling statements with the environment. We show how their analysis and understanding requires the simultaneous mobilization of both main aspects of Goodwin’s work: on the one hand, multimodality and the concept of “environmentally coupled gestures”; and, on the other, the notion of “professional vision.”
