Reviewing the Role of Mobile Learning Technology in Special Operations Forces Language Learning Contexts

|
Abstract:
This report describes current trends, best practices, uses, and potential options suitable for the use of Mobile Learning Technology (MLT) in Special Operations Forces (SOF) language training contexts. In this report, we define MLT has any type of smart device, such as a smartphone or tablet, which can be used to deliver learning content. While MLT has many advantages and potential applications, it should be not considered the magic bullet or solution to all barriers associated with SOF language training. In this report, we argue that MLT offers many significant and unique features which make it a powerful supplementary tool that can be integrated into both formal and informal learning environments. We ultimately conclude that while MLT can be used as a support, supplement, or tool to augment traditional learning, it is likely best used for SOF operator-driven informal learning and to provide performance support (prior to the task/mission) in an operational context. MLT provides SOF operators with the ability to integrate language learning into their careers and to become lifelong language learners.
