Abstract:
; The present article explores the New Plan of Peer Tutoring (Nuevo plan de enseñanza mútua), published in 1821 in Barcelona. This little-known proposal wirtten by two catalan schoolteachers was influenced by the innovative Lancaster system. Addressed to the Spanish Parliament (Cortes), it deals with how Spanish language should be taught in schools in order to improve literacy, social integration and equality. The plan reflects liberal thinking on lingüístic education in Spain at the time, but distinguishes between monolingual regions and bilingual ones, particularly Catalonia. In this context, an innovative method of school grammar teaching for native and non-native speakers of Spanish is presented. The in-depth analysis of the text uncovers the complicated relationship between liberal aspirations and the need to educate children in the still nearly monolingual Catalan society. It shows that in liberal circles even in Catalonia it was believed that Spanish should be prioritised in order to foster national unity and inclusiveness.
