; The paper analyses the presence of the works of the literary tradition in the novels and short stories of immigrant writers in Italy. In an overview, reasons and ways of this presence are reviewed. In particular, the paper focuses on two paths. The first relating to connections with Virgil’s Aeneid, whose plot is interpreted by migrant authors, in a modern key, as a journey of hope of a refugee. A second path concerns Dante and the polysemic reuse of Divine Comedy. Symbol of an unbridgeable distance for some, sign of a possible intercultural meeting for others, inexhaustible linguistic resource for all. The representation of the study of Divine Comedy in the autobiographies of young immigrant writers, and the cultural and religious, rather than linguistic, problems involved, allows us to consider, once again, the need for intercultural education in the Italian school.
