Abstract:
Several previous studies about characters and language in La Celestina have drawn attention to a lack of verosimilitude since characters do not follow the classical precept of decorum, by which masters and servants could not speak with the same high style nor be the object of a similar tragic view. Following S. Gilman, who showed how characters' language is in fact adapted to each situation in LC, in this work I study three kinds of variation in LC dialogues: first, orality in the text, second, differences in the social dialect used by nobles and servants through epistemic markers and third, the register appropriate to situation in the asides. Finally, I reconsider the gap between language and characters as the consequence of the authors' attempt to «write the orality», in which there is a complex negotiation between linguistic and rhetorical devices. ; Los estudios sobre la lengua de los personajes en La Celestina han coincidido en señalar su poca verosimilitud lingüística. Los personajes no seguirían la preceptiva clásica del decorum según la cual amos y criados no podían expresarse con un mismo estilo elevado ni ser objeto de un similar tratamiento trágico. A la luz del trabajo de S. Gilman, quien vio en esta caracterización lingüística una adecuación de la lengua a la situación en que habla el personaje, estudio en este trabajo tres formas de variación lingüística en los diálogos de LC: la dimensión oral del texto, las diferencias en la variedad de lengua utilizada por los personajes nobles y humildes a través del empleo de marcadores discursivos con función modal epistémica y la adecuación del registro a la situación que tipifica el aparte. Los datos reunidos me llevan a reevaluar los desajustes descritos entre personaje y lengua y a integrarlos dentro de un proceso de «escritura de la oralidad» o mimesis del habla como producto de una compleja negociación entre lengua y retórica.
