; This text aims to reflect on the possibility of using a pre-existing discipline, Kinesiology, applied to the study of sign languages, in this case, Libras, in the aspect of its description. Just as there is a rigor in the terminology of anatomical structures and articulatory movements of oral speech, there must also be the same concern regarding signing. By presenting basic principles of Kinesiology and applying them to examples extracted from Deit-Libras: Dicionário enciclopédico ilustrado trilíngue da Língua de Sinais Brasileira (CAPOVILLA; RAPHAEL; MAURICIO, 2013), it is demonstrated the possibility that the kinesiological nomenclature can be used to ensure academic rigor and accuracy in sign language description. The conclusion points out to new research possibilities arising from this first work, and to a necessary partnership between researchers of sign languages with those dedicated to kinesiology.
