Time’s up, translators!
; In face of the lack of academic research on culinary, a field that continuously arouses audience’s interest (PARADOWSKI, 2017), and of the increase in the production of culinary tv programmes, the aim of this research is to investigate the (in)consistency in the translation of phraseologies presented in the Portuguese subtitles of the reality cooking show The Final Table (2018). With a methodology based on Corpus Linguistics (BERBER SARDINHA, 2004; VIANA, 2010) we extracted, through the Sketch Engine tool (KILGARRIFF et al., 2004), the series' keywords in order to find the phraseologies that are recurrent in the program. To analyze the translations, we relied on Christiane Nord's (1997; 2006) concept of functionalist translation and on the concept of conventionality (STEWART, 2000; TAGNIN, 2013). In order to identify whether or not the Portuguese subtitles are consistent, we worked with a parallel and aligned corpus that enabled the analysis of the phraseologies and their respective translations side by side. The phraseologies found were divided into two groups, one consisting of the names of the competition’s elements and the other of the recurrent phraseologies. We concluded that, despite presenting different translations for some elements, the first group was more consistently translated than the second. The translations of the recurrent phraseologies, on the other hand, were mostly inconsistent, presenting up to eight different translations for the same combination of words. In line with Campos and Azevedo (2020), we understand that such inconsistency can directly affect the user’s experience, given that they will not find in the subtitles the same patterns observed in the source text.
