The effects of smoking on phonation: a study on Greek adults ...

Abstract:
Smoking is known to affect voice health. Many studies have examined the voice quality of male and female adult smokers and non-smokers. Some studies have studied the acoustic parameters of the voice such as the fundamental frequency (F0), shimmer and jitter, HNR and NHR parameters, maximum phonation time, and F0 range. Moreover, some studies have employed the Voice Handicap Index and the Dysphonia Severity Index methodologies. Up until now, the studies exploring the aforementioned acoustic parameters and methodologies on Greek speakers are limited. The aim of the present thesis was to shed some light on smoking-related differences in Greek adults. Twenty-seven people, fourteen males and thirteen females with ages ranging from 25 to 38 were recruited for this study. Initially, the participants were asked to complete the adapted and standardized version of VHI in Greek. Then, data for selected acoustic parameters were obtained from six different phonatory tasks: (1) sustained vowel /a/ at a comfortable tone ... : Είναι γνωστό ότι το κάπνισμα επηρεάζει την υγεία της φωνής. Πολλές μελέτες έχουν εξετάσει την ποιότητα της φωνής ανδρών και γυναικών ενηλίκων καπνιστών και μη καπνιστών. Μερικές μελέτες έχουν μελετήσει τις ακουστικές παραμέτρους της φωνής όπως τη μέση θεμελιώδη συχνότητα (F0), τη μεταβλητότητα του ύψους της φωνής από περίοδο σε περίοδο (jitter), τη μεταβλητότητα του πλάτους της φωνής από περίοδο σε περίοδο (shimmer), τους παράμετρους HNR και NHR, το μέγιστο χρόνο φώνησης (MPT), και το εύρος F0. Επιπλέον, ορισμένες μελέτες έχουν χρησιμοποιήσει τις μεθοδολογίες του Δείκτη Φωνητικής Δυσχέρειας (VHI) και του Δείκτη Σοβαρότητας Δυσφωνίας (DSI). Μέχρι τώρα, οι μελέτες που διερευνούν τις προαναφερθείσες ακουστικές παραμέτρους και μεθοδολογίες σε φυσικούς ομιλητές της Ελληνικής είναι περιορισμένες. Στόχος της παρούσας διατριβής ήταν να ερευνήσει στις διαφορές που σχετίζονται με το κάπνισμα στους Έλληνες ενήλικες.
