Abstract:
This doctoral research proposes a comparative and contrastive analysis of the temporal and formantic structure of the vowels of modern Standard Arabic, through a speech corpus produced by Arabic speakers of eight different dialectal origins. The temporal structure of the vowels was explored according to several variables relating to the context (voicing, nasality), but also in relation to the French language, which is a reference language used by all speakers participating in the study. Vowel duration seems to be governed by a general law to all speakers: the Arabic short vowel has a shorter duration than the French vowel which is itself shorter than the Arabic long vowel. The ratio of long vowel length to short vowel that seems to emerge is 1.7. The relationship between duration and vowel quality was also explored. A correlation between duration and value of F1 (first formant) was established: a significant decrease of F1 in long vowels [i:] and [u:] was observed, compared to F1 of the corresponding phonological short vowels. It appears that there are many different degrees of aperture depending on the vowel quantity. F2 (second fomant) of short vowels [i] and [u] is lower than F2 of the corresponding long vowels. This goes in the direction of a higher degree of acuity for long vowels. A detailed analysis of the realizations of short and long /a/ has highlighted the presence of anterior and posterior variants: long and short posterior open vowels appear in emphatic, uvular or apico-dorso-alveolar context. Finally, individual vowel spaces were highlighted, as well as a linguistic vowel space beyond dialectal variability. ; Cette recherche doctorale propose une analyse comparative et contrastive de la structure temporelle et formantique des voyelles de l'arabe standard moderne, à travers un corpus produit par des locuteurs arabophones de huit origines dialectales différentes. La structure temporelle des voyelles a été explorée en fonction de plusieurs variables relatives au contexte (voisement, nasalité), mais aussi par rapport à la langue française, langue de référence pratiquée par tous les locuteurs participant à l'étude. Il ressort que la quantité vocalique semble régie par une loi générale à l'ensemble des locuteurs : la voyelle brève arabe a une durée inférieure à la voyelle française qui est elle-même plus brève que la voyelle longue arabe. Le rapport de durée voyelle longue/voyelle brève qui semble se dégager est de 1,7 en moyenne. La relation entre quantité et qualité vocalique a également été explorée. Une corrélation entre durée et valeur de F1 (premier formant) a été établie : une baisse significative du F1 des voyelles longues [i:] et [u:] a été observée, par rapport au F1 des voyelles brèves phonologiques correspondantes. Il ressort qu'il existe bien des degrés d'aperture différents en fonction de la quantité vocalique. Le F2 (deuxième formant) des voyelles brèves [i] et [u] est plus bas que le F2 des voyelles longues correspondantes. Cela va dans le sens d'un degré d'acuité plus élevé pour les voyelles longues. Une analyse fine des réalisations de la voyelle /a/ brève et sa correspondante /a:/ longue a mis en valeur la présence de variantes antérieures et postérieures : les voyelles ouvertes longue et brève postérieures sont présentes en contexte emphatique, uvulaire ou apico-dorso-alvéolaire. Pour finir, des espaces vocaliques individuels ont été mis en valeur, ainsi qu'un espace vocalique linguistique au-delà de la variabilité dialectale.
