Abstract:
This study seeks to determine how well rare moments of *referential* clarity, in which it is easy to guess the speaker’s intended referent from the visual information alone, coincide with moments of *auditory* clarity, in the speech of parents to their children. It builds on a body of previous work using what is known as the “Human Simulation Paradigm” (HSP). Introduced by Gillette et al. (1999), the HSP uses adults to simulate children in the early stages of word learning. The original idea was to work out whether characteristic features of children’s word learning are due to conceptual limitations of children or to the limited information available to children when learning. If when (presumably) conceptually mature adults observe the same information that is available to learning children, they reveal the same kinds of patterns of learning that children show, this result would indicate that those patterns are not the consequence of the children’s juvenile concepts but rather the consequence of ...
