The role of explicit memory in early L2 syntactic development: A structural priming study ...
Muylle, Merel. - : Open Science Framework, 2021
Abstract: The developmental theory of shared syntactic representations (Hartsuiker & Bernolet, 2017) states that in the earliest phases of L2 acquisition, item-specific priming within the L2 (i.e., when there is lexical overlap between the prime and target sentence) is a result of explicit memory strategies (e.g., copy and edit), whereas in later phases this reflects the formation of item-specific structural representations within the L2. Hence, if in a priming task the learner cannot use explicit memory strategies to formulate sentences such as under high working memory (WM) load conditions, only learners who are in later phases of L2 acquisition should exhibit structural priming with lexical overlap. To investigate this hypothesis, we will conduct a web-based experiment in which we will compare structural priming within the L2 for low proficient and highly proficient L2 speakers of French under low vs. high WM load conditions (within-subject factor). The WM load will be induced by means of a dual task design, ...
