: PERSEE, 1996
Abstract:
; abstract : The empirical discovery of the African languages began in the 15th century as the Portuguese progressively explored the coasts of Africa. It gave rise to a strategy of interpretation ; to the teaching of Portuguese to the Africans ; to a geographical survey of the languages and to an empirical comparatist activity. In the 17th century ; in a limited area (Angola) ; two Bantu languages ; Kikongo and Kimbundu ; were involved in a double « technological revolution » : the transfer of the Latin alphabet to the African languages and the writing of the first lexicons and grammars. The « classes of nouns » gave rise to a theoretical debate on the possibility of applying the Latin cases to the African languages and on the article. This period is the first stage of African linguistics (from the 16th to the 18th century) ; which may be dubbed « catholic and Portuguese ».
