Talking shop: The communicative teaching of English in non-English-speaking countries

Abstract:
In July 1982, a discussion forum was held at the University of Reading, England, to consider the communicative teaching of English in non-English-speaking countries. It was attended by some 150 teachers of English from outside Britain who were taking short in-service training courses at the University's linguistics department and Centre of Applied Language Studies. Questions were collected from participants both before and during the session. Extracts from the discussion (taken from a tape recording) appear below.
