Talking shop: The communicative teaching of English in non-English-speaking countries
Abstract: In July 1982, a discussion forum was held at the University of Reading, England, to consider the communicative teaching of English in non-English-speaking countries. It was attended by some 150 teachers of English from outside Britain who were taking short in-service training courses at the University's linguistics department and Centre of Applied Language Studies. There were also six panellists: Rod Bolitho—South Devon Technical College fELT Journal Advisory Panel) Roger Gower—Bell School, Cambridge (ELI Journal Advisory Panel) Keith Johnson (Chairman and organizer)—Linguistics Department, University of Reading fELT Journal Advisory Panel) Simon Murison—Bowie-Oxford University Press fELT Journal Board of Management) Richard Rossner—Anglo Mexican Institute (Editor, ELT Journal Ron White-Centre for Applied Language Studies, University of Reading. Questions were collected from participants both before and during the session. Extracts from the discussion (taken from a tape recording) appear below.
