Abstract:
L’articolo ha lo scopo di studiare gli elementi lessicali turchi nel campo semantico dei giochi di società e d’azzardo supposti essere prestiti dall’italiano o da altre varietà italo-romanze (come il veneziano e il genovese). Sono stati esaminati venticinque prestiti e ciò che è emerso dallo studio è un problema endemico per quel che riguarda i prestiti occidentali in turco, cioè il complicato rapporto linguistico fra il greco e l’italiano nell’Impero Ottomano (gran parte dei termini è databile al XIX secolo). Questo fatto rende abbastanza difficile stabilire quale sia la vera fonte immediata di molti prestiti. Altre lingue, inoltre, come il francese e il giudeo-spagnolo, sono coinvolte perché gli abitanti di Istanbul e Smirne erano molto spesso plurilingui e non meno di 4-5 lingue devono essere tenute in conto per quel che riguarda il loro repertorio linguistico. L’autore considera i prestiti turchi esaminati una testimonianza dell’esistenza di una lingua non scritta che può essere chiamata italo-levantino, una varietà di italiano che ebbe un particolare sviluppo nella società plurilingue dell’ultimo secolo dell’Impero Ottomano. The Italian contribution to the Turkish lexicon of parlour games and gambling This paper scrutinizes Turkish lexical items in the semantic field of parlour games and gambling assumed to be borrowings from Italian or other Italo-Romance varieties (such as Venetian or Genoese). Twenty-five loanwords were examined in this study which shed light on the endemic problem as far as Western borrowings in Turkish are concerned, i.e. the complicated linguistic relationship between Greek and Italian in the Ottoman Empire (of the items can be dated to the 19th century). This makes it quite difficult to establish the real source of many loanwords. Moreover, other languages such as French and Judeo-Spanish, are involved because the inhabitants of Istanbul and Smyrna were very often plurilingual, and no less than 4-5 languages made up their linguistic repertoires. The author considers the Turkish lexical items analyzed as a testimony of the existence of an unwritten language which can be called Italo-Levantine, a variety of Italian which had a particular development in the last century of the Ottoman Empire.
