Abstract:
This thesis / dissertation was completed and submitted at Nipissing University, and is made freely accessible through the University of Toronto’s TSpace repository ; Teacher perceptions of speech-to-text technology (S2T) often influence its use in the classroom. The influence of teacher candidates? perceptions, as denoted by their beliefs and attitudes toward technology integration and literacy practices is not fully represented in the literature. This study addresses the gap in the literature using a collaborative action research approach that facilitated independent and collaborative reflection development. It revealed the influence of beliefs and attitudes on practice, providing a rich description of four teacher candidates? experiences integrating S2T. It was found that beliefs and attitudes influence differential outcomes; traditional literacy beliefs and attitudes tended to limit practice and increasingly higher-order transformation of student learning processes were fostered through more student- centred approaches. Collaborative, hands-on opportunities including microteaching promoted professional development and successful integration experiences. This study suggests that increased opportunities for teacher candidates to explore and develop their beliefs and attitudes may increase progressive literacy practices and higher-order technology integration. ; M.Ed.
