Abstract:
This dissertation examines the relationship between language and politics in the Hellenistic period, more specifically during the third and second centuries BC, with a particular focus on the shared political language that the Greek city-states used while conducting their political business and the deviations from that common idiom. The thesis, mainly through the usage of epigraphical evidence, argues that the employment of local dialects that diverged from the Hellenistic koine and of distinctive local practices helped a polis assert its own identity while also being part of the wider increasingly homogeneous Greek world. In particular, the thesis demonstrates that the Hellenistic cities in mainland and Aegean Greece were making conscious efforts to retain their ancestral dialectal varieties and at the same time were creatively experimenting with the democratic political culture that they had inherited from their Classical predecessors.
