Abstract:
Abstract: This study intended to explore the cognitions and practices in teaching reading among the different groups of English language teachers in Malaysia in which English is the second language. This research took place in Sabah, one of the largest states in Malaysia. For the purpose of this article, the researcher chose to present the findings between two groups of secondary school teachers and the data were gathered through a series of interviews and classroom observation. Some of the results revealed that; (1) both groups showed a mismatch between what they believed and what they did, (2) one group was not comfortable in their current teaching contexts due to some circumstances and this had an effect on their emotions as well as their teaching practices and, (3) majority of the teachers in both groups practiced the traditional ways of teaching reading through reading aloud and silent reading strategies. It is a bit early to conclude the whole findings but apparently despite having positive perceptions towards teaching reading in English, most of the teachers were not concerned to explore new pedagogies although they were aware that they were responsible in nurturing their students as future fluent readers.
