Abstract:
Im Zuge einer Annäherung an das Verhältnis dessen, was in Texten der zeitgenössischen Dichterin und Übersetzerin Barbara Köhler (* 1959) potenziell angelegt ist, und was bei Lektüren aus ihnen hervor- und in sie eingehen könnte, widmet sich die vorliegende Arbeit dem Zusammenhang von Übersetzen und Lesen zunächst mit einem epistemologischen Anliegen: Wenn die Erkenntnisebene der Sprache, einer Bemerkung des Linguisten Roman Jakobson folgend, Übersetzung fordert, und die Philologien zunächst Erkenntnisse von etwas aus Sprache Hergestelltem, von Texten entwickeln, so ist auch für die vorliegenden, philologisch ausgerichteten Lektüren von Köhlers Texten und insbesondere von dem Gedicht LÖSUNG aus dem Band »Blue Box« (1995) eine Übersetzungsbewegung geltend zu machen. Interessiert sich eine Übersetzung, in der Erweiterung eines Gedankens des Philosophen Walter Benjamin, für eine bestimmte Bedeutung eines sprachlichen Werks, die sich in seiner Übersetzbarkeit äußert, so vermag sie vorläufig des Raums zwischen den Sprachen gewahr zu werden und diesen verstehend und nichtverstehend zu erkunden. Dass ein solcher Raum nicht lediglich metaphorisch zu begreifen ist, sondern die grammatischen und kommunikativen Strukturen auch schon einer Sprache durchdringt, verweist auf räumliche Dimensionen einer Sprachkritik, mit denen sich Barbara Köhler über die ganze Breite ihres literarischen Schaffens hinweg beschäftigt. Zu denken ist hierbei etwa an ihre Arbeiten zum ‚Sprachraum‘, das textuelle Aufsuchen von Orten weiblichen Sprechens oder die von ihr ersonnene ‚Boxform‘ als räumliches Organisationsprinzip ihres Schreibens. Daher werden im Rahmen dieser Arbeit in einem ersten Schritt mit Texten von Köhler bestimmte Zusammenhänge von Sprache, Raum und Übersetzung beleuchtet. Ausgehend davon werden sodann drei Lektüren des Gedichts LÖSUNG entwickelt, die in Erwägungen der Topologie, der Fotografie und des Zitats zu den Möglichkeiten des Lesens im Raum der Übersetzung einladen. ; The thesis at hand investigates selected texts by contemporary poet and translator Barbara Köhler (b. 1959) with a particular focus on what might be present in the texts and what might evolve from and merge into them during the reading process. The thesis, thus, deals with the connection between translation and reading in the light of an epistemological concern: If, following a remark by Roman Jakobson, linguistic understanding requires translation, and philology attempts to make sense of and develop the knowledge of texts, a translational reading might as well be claimed for Köhler’s texts and in particular of the poem LÖSUNG in the volume »Blue Box« (1995). A translation which – expanding a thought of the philosopher Walter Benjamin – is interested in a ‘specific significance’ inherent in texts, which manifests itself in their translatability, is able to provisionally become aware of the space between languages and explore this space by understanding and not-understanding. Such a space is not considered a merely metaphorical one but regarded as permeating the grammatical and communicative structure of a language and refers to the spatial dimensions of language criticism, which Barbara Köhler is engaged with throughout the whole spectrum of her literary work: be it her pieces on the ‘Sprachraum’ (‘language space’), the textual search for places of female speech or the ‘Boxform’, which she discovered as a spatial constraint for her writing. Therefore, the first part of this thesis shines light on several connections between language, space and translation in and with the help of Köhler’s texts. Drawing on this configuration, the second part develops three readings of the poem LÖSUNG, which reflect on topology, photography and citation and invite the reader to the possibilities of reading in the space of translation.
