Mothers’ Experiences of Raising a Child with Autism Spectrum Disorder in Indian and Bangladeshi Intergenerational Families
Abstract:
Research has shown that South Asian parents have unique cultural experiences while raising a child with ASD. This study explores South Asian mothers’ experiences of raising a child with ASD in an intergenerational family. Additionally, it examines the impacts of the grandparent’s attributions about the grandchild’s ASD and the grandparents’ expectations to have a bilingual grandchild on mothers’ emotional health. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on eight South Asian bilingual mothers who raised children (4–13 years) with a diagnosis of ASD. An analysis showed themes such as mothers’ experiences around grandparental involvement, attributions for ASD held by the grandparents, grandparents’ expectations of bilingualism, and mothers’ other experiences. The findings showed that grandparental involvement was considered both supportive and challenging, mothers did not report distress around grandparents’ expectations to have bilingual grandchild, and that grandparents’ negative attributions impacted mothers’ emotional health. Importantly, viewing the child’s ASD through the social or medical model of disability led mothers to have less distress. Some protective factors for the mothers’ emotional health were their husbands' support, being religious, and having social connections. Clinical implications include providing culturally sensitive care to mothers and the family, exploring impacts of grandparental involvement, improving mothers’ adjustment, reducing mental health stigma, and conducting outreach services. Further research is needed to study South Asian mothers who live in non-traditional families, mothers from various South Asian descents, and South Asian mothers coping and acculturation, and explore overall family’s adjustment.
