Abstract:
The present pilot study proposes a theory accounting for the importance of language in nationalistic preferences and an empirical test of some of its predictions. We define nationalism as the disposition to defend cultural homogeneity as a basis for political unity, statehood, and power sharing. We argue that linguistic homogeneity plays a special role in fostering feelings of large-scale political unity. A growing body of evidence from social and cognitive psychology demonstrates that humans attend to linguistic cues in their social categorization processes (Kinzler et al., 2007). Linguistic similarity has been found to generate social trust (Kinzler et al., 2011), selective imitation of food preferences (Shutts et al., 2009) and expectations of friendly relationships (Liberman et al., 2014). Importantly, such language-based preferences have been found to trump racial preferences (Kinzler, 2009, Pietraszewski et al., 2014, for a review, see Kinzler et al., 2010 and Kinzler, 2021).
