Abstract:
The cultural history of dictionaries is a new field that is particularly interested in the study of representations. The polemics and misinformation surrounding Islam prompted us to study the representations of this religion in dictionaries and encyclopaedias from the eighteenth to the twentieth century, with the aim of understanding how stereotypes about Muhammad, Islam and the Koran were formed. We have studied seven lexicographical works and analysed all the articles referring to the Muslim fact. This analysis allowed us to take into account the evolution of the representations of Islam and especially the role played over time by dictionaries in the dissemination of stereotypes as well as in their reinforcement. ; L’histoire culturelle des dictionnaires est un nouveau domaine qui porte un intérêt particulier à l’étude des représentations. Les polémiques et la désinformation autour de l’islam nous ont incité à faire une étude des représentations de cette religion dans les dictionnaires et les encyclopédies du XVIIIe siècle au XXe siècle, dans le but de comprendre comment se sont forgés les stéréotypes concernant Mahomet, l’islam et le Coran. Il s’agit là de l’étude de sept ouvrages lexicographiques dont nous avons analysé l’ensemble des articles qui font référence au fait musulman. Cette analyse nous a permis de rendre compte de l’évolution des représentations de l’islam et surtout du rôle joué au fil du temps par les dictionnaires dans la diffusion des stéréotypes ainsi que dans leur renforcement.
