Mehrsprachigkeit - ein Schutz vor Demenz
Abstract: Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit den kognitiven Vorteilen, die zwei- und mehrsprachige Menschen erfahren und inwieweit diese Vorteile im Alter eine schützende Funktion bezüglich des Auftretens von Demenzerkrankungen übernehmen. Neurologische und neuropsychologische Forschungsergebnisse zeigen, dass sich bei einem frühen Erwerb mehrerer Sprachen ein Vorsprung gegenüber Einsprachigen in Form verstärkter exekutiver Funktionen bemerkbar macht. Diese verbesserten Funktionen bleiben bi- und multilingualen Erwachsenen bis ins höhere Lebensalter erhalten und wirken sich positiv auf die kognitive Reserve aus. Aktuelle Studien zeigen, dass diese Elemente mit großer Wahrscheinlichkeit dazu beitragen, dass mehrsprachige DemenzpatientInnen über Mechanismen verfügen, die es ihnen erlauben die ersten Krankheitssymptome zu kompensieren und den Krankheitsausbruch um durchschnittlich fünf Jahre zu verzögern. In diesem Zusammenhang ist anzunehmen, dass DolmetscherInnen aufgrund der komplexen Denkprozesse während des Dolmetschens und ihrer Mehrsprachigkeit eine besondere Form des Schutzes erfahren. ; Previous studies have shown that bilingualism and multilingualism are associated with a cognitive advantage. The objective of this Master’s thesis was to determine if this advantage persists in old age and to what extent bilinguals and multilinguals are protected against the onset of dementia. Recent neurological and neuropsychological findings have shown that the early acquisition of several languages enhances executive functions. This positive effect persists in older adults and contributes to cognitive reserve. Current studies suggest that bilingual and multilingual individuals apply mechanisms that offset the early symptoms of dementia and delay its onset by five years. Consecutive and simultaneous interpreting are known to be highly demanding tasks that imply complex cognitive processes and high-level language skills. Thus, it can be assumed that interpreters benefit from effective protection against age-related cognitive declines.
