	Abstract: In The Language Instinct, Pinker attempts to demonstrate that language is an innate faculty distinct from general intelligence. In support of this claim, he offers a number of arguments, three of which have been selected here for closer scrutiny. First, I discuss the argument of acquisition, which reiterates the traditional nativist claim that language acquisition is vastly underdetermined by experience and must be innately constrained. It is concluded that this claim is either ill-founded or made unnecessary by Pinker's own theory of language acquisition as it is presented in his book Language Learnability and Cognition. Then I turn to the notion of a critical period, which, in Pinker's view, reflects the maturation process of the language faculty. Contrary to what Pinker says, there is no strong evidence that the critical period corresponds to the maturation of a domain-specific faculty. Last, I review the data from pathological dissociations of language and cognition (Specific Language Impairments and Williams Syndrome). The facts are more complex than Pinker claims, and his conclusion that language is dissociated from cognition because it is innately specific appears to be dubious. Thus, the hereditary component of SLI may not be linked to a gene specifically coding for « grammatical » abilities. In conclusion, Pinker's nativist positions go far beyond anything warranted by the data at hand, and his own presentation of the data appears to be heavily biased. ; Dans L'Instinct de Langage, Pinker tente de démontrer que le langage est une faculté innée, distincte de l'intelligence. Pour le prouver, il convoque plusieurs arguments, dont trois sont discutés ici. J'examine d'abord l'argument de l'acquisition, qui reconduit la thèse nativiste traditionnelle selon laquelle l'acquisition du langage est largement sous-déterminée par l'expérience et doit être soumise à des contraintes innées. Cette thèse apparaît soit mal fondée, soit inutile à la théorie de l'acquisition de Pinker, telle qu'elle est exposée dans son livre Language Learnability and Cognition. Le deuxième argument concerne la notion de période critique. Selon Pinker, celle-ci refléterait le processus de maturation de la faculté de langage. Un examen des données sur lesquelles il fonde cette conclusion amène pourtant à mettre en doute cette interprétation de la période critique. Enfin, je passe en revue les études sur les dissociations entre langage et cognition (les Troubles Spécifiques du Développement du Langage et le Syndrome de Williams). Il suit de cette revue que les faits sont plus complexes que Pinker ne le dit et ne permettent pas d'établir avec certitude que le langage est une faculté spécifique innée. Ainsi, le composant héréditaire des TSDL pourrait ne pas être lié à un gène codant spécifiquement la capacité de traitement de la « grammaire ». En conclusion, les positions nativistes de Pinker outrepassent ce que les données permettent d'établir et sa présentation des faits est fortement biaisée.
