Abstract: Workplaces have been at the heart of sociolinguistic studies throughout the history of the field. Initially providing a means to categorise the social class of participants in sociolinguistic studies or offering a physical site where sociolinguistic studies could be conducted, the workplace has continued to evolve as a theoretical and critical space to examine the co-construction of linguistic and social orders. In particular, studies operationalising the workplace in sociolinguistics and studies in the subfield of Workplace Sociolinguistics have benefited from and shaped understanding of discriminatory practices centred on language, penalties that speakers of nondominant varieties face in trying to access social and economic capital, and agency that speakers may enact to construct their identities and navigate their interactions. The entry provides an overview a core studies that shaped our understanding of work and workplaces and key methodological approaches.
