Abstract:
I have organised my thesis following the traditional classification of participles in Ancient Greek : attributive, circumstantial, absolute, completive, and predicative. Each chapter consists of a presentation and an analysis of the Homeric data, followed by a comparative section, where I present other Indo-European languages.The first chapter treats the attributive participles. After a short overview of the position and the grammatical tense of these participles in Homer, I have proceeded to the question of competition between this type of participles and relative clauses, since both of them fulfil the same function. In conclusion, I have determined that next to metrical factors, transitivity plays a very important role. In the next sections of the chapter I have treated the question of substantivised participles.The second chapter is dedicated to circumstantial participles. I have gathered all their semantic types found in Homeric Greek. Next, I have treated the question of their usage in auto- and hetero-referential contexts in order to show that both are equally important. The following section touches upon the transfer of modality between the main verbs and participles and its conditions.The third chapter treats absolute participles. I have introduced the notion of dominant participles, which express the main idea of the phrase while grammatically and morphologically agreeing with the noun which they modify. For Ancient Greek, I have proposed a development of the genitive absolute from the construction with a dominant participle of the type Sicilia amissa, well-known from Latin, but also found in Greek.The next chapter is dedicated to completive participles which serve as secondary predication. The most interesting question regarding this topic are the semantic classes of verbs which allow such participial predication. In the Greek section, I have collected all these verbs and I have also treated the competition between different types of complementation, especially infinitival, for some of them.At the end, I have treated the participles which are very rare in Homeric Greek: predicative participles which are accompanied by a copular verb in a periphrastic construction. I have shown that this type is not yet present in Homeric Greek outside of certain grammaticalised periphrases. ; J’ai organisé ma thèse selon le classement traditionnel de participes en grec : les participes attributifs, circonstanciels, absolus, attributs et prédicatifs. Chaque chapitre consiste en présentation et analyse des données homériques suivies par une section comparative, où je présente d’autres langues indo-européennes. Le premier chapitre traite les participes attributifs. Après une brève étude de la position et les temps grammaticaux de ce participes chez Homère, je suis passé au sujet de concurrence entre les participes de ce type et les phrases relatives, car les deux remplissent effectivement la même fonction. En conclusion, j’ai déterminé qu’à côté de facteurs métriques, la transitivité du verbe joue un rôle très important.Le deuxième chapitre concerne les participes circonstanciels. J’ai effectué un recueil de tous leur types sémantiques en grec homérique. Ensuite, j’ai traité la question de leur usage dans des contextes auto- et hétéro-référentiel pour montrer que les deux sont également importants. La section suivante touche le transfert de modalité entre les verbes et les participes et les conditions dans lesquelles ce transfère a lieu .Le troisième chapitre est consacré aux participes absolus. J’y introduis l’idée du participe dominant, c’est-à-dire un participe qui sémantiquement exprime l’idée principale de la phrase, même si grammaticalement et syntaxiquement il est accordé au nom. Pour le grec ancien, j’ai proposé un développement du génitif absolu à partir du construction à participe dominant du type Sicilia amissa bien connu en latin, mais trouvé également en grec. Le prochain chapitre traite les participes attributs, qui complémentent le verbe qu’ils suivent. La question la plus intéressante concerne les classes sémantiques des verbes qui peuvent être complémentés par un participe. Dans la section grecque j’ai recueilli tous ces verbes et j’ai également traité la concurrences entre différents types de complémentation, particulièrement entre le participes et les infinitifs pour certains verbes. À la fin, j’ai traité les participes les moins représentés en grec, à savoir les participes accompagnés d’un verbe auxiliaire dans une construction périphrastique. J’ai démontré que ce type, hors de certaines périphrases grammaticalisées, n’existe pas encore en grec homérique.
