Audiovisual materials as tools to teach English as a Foreign Language at tertiary level
In: IV Jornadas Iberoamericanas de Innovación Educativa en el ámbito de las TIC, en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, 16-17 de noviembre de 2017 [ISBN 978-84-697-7101-3], p. 137-144 (2018)
Abstract: In this study, we propose a learning approach based on the use of cinema, including film-related computing applications as a teaching resource with the aim of introducing some specialized contents in the class of English as a foreign language. The proposal outlined here is addressed to tertiary level studies, and this means B2 and C1 levels. The use of specific film fragments would have more attractive and motivating lessons so as to promote the students autonomy and proficiency in English as a second language. First, we will present a short theoretical framework, and then, our learning proposal is offered, and this promotes the development of specific competences such as the linguistic and communicative competences, the digital competence and the cultural awareness of the students. A sample set of activities using cinema as the main didactica tool is also included. In this case, activities proposed resolve around the figure of Elizabeth I, as much film material is available, and we are likely to find specific portions of texts to improve students' proficiency of the language.
