Abstract: International audience ; The paper addresses a hidden issue in use of MOOCs for language learning, with implications for all subjects, and proposes reflection on the content of OERs. Online language materials are innovative technologically, but less so theoretically. What should we teach on LMOOCs or with other OERs? What learning experience do we intend for our participants, and what are successful outcomes? Assumptions in LMOOCS are analysed, and observation of OER content provides illustrations of linguistic elements that define their educational and social nature. An additional problem is the 'deception of choice' with OERs: there is excess material available, making selection onerous, and undermining motivation. Sophisticated technological media conceal a lack of variety in approaches and reflect limited awareness of language learning in different settings. Language is a tool for understanding, but also experience of difference: OERs should offer a multilingual experience and question monolingualism and monoculturalism. We suggest a change in approach, emphasising process. This will include intercomprehension, multilingualism, cooperation and collaboration, reception of minority voices and renegotiation of colonial history.
