Abstract:
Recombinative generalized reading is the ability to respond to different combinations of letters and syllables that form new words without an explicit training. The stimulus equivalence paradigm has been the instrument used to explain the repertoires emergence of generalized reading without having been taught all these conditional discriminations. In this case, the linguistic units will be now under control of new relationships. The aim of this study was to establish the transfer of stimulus control of words spelled with Braille symbols for three-syllable words spelled with the symbols of the Roman alphabet printed in relief. Participants were two teenage girls with elementary and medium level of schooling and an adult at a university level of education. They all had congenital blindness and were literate on Braille and they all knew the symbols of the Roman alphabet. Three modes of presentation of tactile stimuli were planned: words, syllables and letters. To install the baseline a teaching procedure was organized with words, syllables and letters, which were echoed before the participants touch them. The AB relationship was taught and it configured the recognition of representing images that corresponded to the words. The BA relationship was taught to confirm that the participant was able to name the figures printed in relief. The AC relationship was referring to the field of reading Braille characters and it was a prerequisite for the participant inclusion in the study. The AD relationship corresponded to the presentation of the word, syllable or letter in the auditory modality for the participant to grope a stimulus as compared to the corresponding word, syllable or letter written with Roman characters printed in relief. The CD relationship evaluated the transfer of discriminative functions for the presentation of three-syllable words spelled in Braille as a model for the participant to choose the correct stimulus as compared to the words spelled with the Roman alphabet printed in relief. Finally, the DB relationship stated that in presence of three-syllable words spelled in Roman letters embossed, each participant chose the corresponding figure. The results showed the transfer of discriminative functions in Braille characters for the symbols of the Roman alphabet printed in relief on transitivity tests, with 100% of accuracy for the performance of the three participants. For these results it can be stated that once having acquired mastery of reading the Braille System it is possible to extend this control stimuli to the domain of reading the symbols of the Roman alphabet in relief, and question the use of the Braille System as a unique method to literate visually impaired people. ; CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico ; A leitura recombinativa generalizada é a habilidade de responder a diferentes combinações de letras e sílabas que formam novas palavras sem treino explícito. O paradigma de equivalência de estímulos tem sido o instrumento utilizado para explicar a emergência de repertórios de leitura generalizada sem que para isso todas as discriminações condicionais tenham sido ensinadas. Nesse caso, as unidades linguísticas passam a estar sob o controle de novas relações. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar a transferência de controle de estímulos de palavras grafadas com os símbolos do Braille para palavras grafadas com os símbolos do alfabeto romano impressos em relevo. Os participantes foram duas adolescentes com escolarização de nível médio e um adulto com escolarização de nível superior. Todos apresentavam cegueira congênita, alfabetizados em Braille e não conheciam os símbolos do alfabeto romano. Planejaram-se três modalidades de apresentação dos estímulos táteis: palavras, sílabas e letras. Para instalar a linha de base foi organizado um procedimento de ensino com palavras, sílabas e letras que eram ecoadas antes que os participantes as tocassem. A relação AB foi ensinada e configurou o reconhecimento das figuras que correspondiam às palavras ditadas. A relação BA foi ensinada para confirmar que o participante era capaz de nomear as figuras impressas em relevo. A relação AC se referia ao domínio da leitura pelos caracteres em Braille e foi pré-requisito para a inclusão do participante no estudo. A relação AD correspondeu à apresentação da palavra, sílaba ou letra na modalidade auditiva para que o participante tateasse o estímulo correspondente tendo como comparação a palavra, sílaba ou letra grafada com caracteres romanos impressos em relevo. A relação CD avaliou a transferência de funções discriminativas pela apresentação das palavras trissílabas grafadas em Braille como modelo para que o participante selecionasse o estímulo correto tendo como comparação as palavras grafadas com o alfabeto romano impressas em relevo. E a relação DB estabeleceu que na presença de palavras trissílabas grafadas com os caracteres romanos em relevo, cada participante selecionasse a figura correspondente. Os resultados mostraram a transferência do controle de estímulos discriminativos dos caracteres em Braille para os símbolos do alfabeto romano impressos em relevo nos testes de transitividade, com 100% de acertos para o desempenho dos três participantes. Para esses resultados pode-se afirmar que uma vez tendo adquirido o domínio da leitura pelo Sistema Braille é possível estender esse controle de estímulos para o domínio da leitura pelos símbolos do alfabeto romano em relevo e questionar o uso do Sistema Braille como método exclusivo para alfabetizar deficientes visuais.
