; This dissertation sets out to look at Interpreting Studies from an ethnographic perspective, focusing on the interpreter’s (in)visibility in legal settings. Centred on the study of a criminal court case involving human trafficking, whereby the interpretation is rendered in Romanian and Portuguese languages, this corpus-based analysis comprises the audio-recording of the foreign victim’s personal statements, its transcriptions into Portuguese and relevant extracts of the respective court ruling. Rather than analysing the speech dilemmas (“talk as text”), this sociolinguistic approach aims, first and foremost, at unveiling the interpreter’s prominent role within the courtroom communication process (“talk as activity”). Although reminiscing Venuti’s concept, the interpreter’s visibility thus gains a broader sense combining physical presence, a distinct voice in the interpreted speech, influence, and status recognition. Relying on the observation of the empirical sample, further corroborated by an array of national and international media pieces, it becomes clear that both professionalisation and specialised training are critical tools towards building a powerful and reliable reputation of the interpreter, not only in legal settings but, mostly, out in the public sphere. It also appears vital that an effective intercommunication process in such settings requires that the remaining participants (including judges, public attorneys, lawyers, and police authorities) undergo mandatory training on how to properly engage with the interpreter, who stands out as an essential player therein. The purpose of this research is, therefore, to ascertain the link between the underlying aspects of the interpreting task and their complementarity, as well as raising awareness of the interpreters’ impacting and desired visibility.
