The sense of a demonstrative referring to a visually given object
Abstract: The subject-matter of this work is demonstrative expressions in their use to refer to spatio-temporal objects that are either presently or previously encountered by the subject on the basis of his visual perception. It is argued that a demonstrative expression, used in this way, has a kind of Fregean sense which is called 'object-dependent'. This means that no sense is grasped by the subject if he has not visually singled out the relevant object. At the sentential level, this amounts to the claim that such singling out is necessary for the subject's understanding of a sentence containing a demonstrative used in the way described. This work also includes an extensive discussion of the relationship between the sense of a demonstrative thus conceived of and its linguistic meaning, where these two notions are carefully distinguished. A distinction is also made between the sense of the demonstrative and the sense of the definite description. It is argued that unlike the sense of the demonstrative -- the sense characteristic of the definite description is 'object-independent'. That is, the subject need not visually single out the relevant object in order to grasp the description's sense. The notion of the subject's demonstration accompanying his utterance of a demonstrative expression is also discussed, and, following Kaplan, it is granted that the demonstration can be regarded as having sense similar to the sense of the definite description. The concluding chapter is designed to round off the discussion preceding it. It deals with some relevant questions raised by the so-called referential/attributive distinction first brought out by Donnellan, and also with the question as to how the account of the sense of a demonstrative developed in this work fits in with Kripke's notion of rigid designation. At the end, a few general remarks are made about McDowell's and Evans' conception of the sense of a proper name, which has some relevant links with the views advocated in the present work.
