Abstract:
; The advent of the Internet has revolutionised the way we live. The way we obtain information is not an exception. A particular focus of the present research is online newspapers, more specifically on the genre of newbites, first identified by Knox (2007; 2009) and further researched from a genre perspective in only two papers, by Tereszkiewicz (2012) as well as Porto Requejo and Belmonte (2016). The present project uses Bhatia's (1993) seven-step framework as the basis for analysis. As suggested by the author, the model was modified to better cater for the purposes of the research. In particular, step five of linguistic analysis has was changed to incorporate the investigation of evaluative mechanisms alongside the moves analysis. The interest in researching evaluative language in newsbites has been prompted by Knox's (2009: ii) claim that their authors have to rely on visuals to communicate the values of the news institution to the readers. For this purpose, White's (2006) framework for the analysis of evaluative language in journalistic discourse based on Appraisal theory (Martin & White 2005) is applied to the present corpus compiled of newsbites taken from six online newspapers, three of which can be characterised as tabloid whereas the other three as broadsheet ones. Such constellation of the data set has encouraged the research question whose aim is to tease out any differences and/or similarities between evaluative mechanisms employed in tabloid and broadsheet online newsbites. In the course of analysis, the following genre-related issues of newsbites are discussed, such as their situational context, discourse community, and communicative purposes. The moves analysis identified thirteen moves within the structure of newsbites, with only one of them, namely Headline, described as a conventional one. Furthermore, the structure of tabloid and broadsheet newsbites is discussed revealing significant dissimilarities between the two. Further linguistic analysis concentrating around evaluative language of newsbites lends evidence to all the mechanisms described by White (2006). Despite expected strive for impartiality in journalistic discourse, approximately 40 % of singled out mechanisms in newsbites of the this corpus can be described as explicit ones. Additionally, the comparison of evaluative mechanisms employed in broadsheet and tabloid newsbites has not yielded any significant differences which is further linked to communicative purposes of newsbites.
