|
Abstract:
; With the rising volume and complexity of source texts, there is an increasing need for reliable and continuously updated language resources to help translators specialise in a new subject field. This thesis aims to develop a concept for creating such a resource for legal translation: a bilingual glossary of frequent terms and their usage in Austrian and Russian criminal law. Drawing on the hypothesis that statutory texts are highly representative of legal language, two corpora of the respective criminal codes and codes of criminal procedure of the Republic of Austria and the Russian Federation are built. By using corpus-linguistic methods, the most frequent terms and their relevant co-occurrences are extracted from the corpora. The results serve as the basis of a bilingual glossary comprising 40 entries. It is built according to the terminological principles and the research on language, translation and terminology in law as discussed in the theoretical part of the thesis. The conclusion and the final discussion critically evaluate the effectiveness of applying both corpus-linguistic methods and traditional terminological principles to terminology work in Austrian and Russian criminal law.
