This paper presents an overview of the state of the art of the study of punctuation usage in computer-mediated communication (CMC), also in light of the so-called communicative‑textual analysis of modern Italian punctuation (Ferrari et al. 2018). The first introductory section presents the field of study and the issues addressed. The second section deals with the general treatment of CMC punctuation in the linguistic literature, while in the third section the main punctuation marks are individually analyzed. In the fourth section, CMC punctuation is analyzed in light of the communicative-textual analysis of modern Italian punctuation. The paper includes a rich bibliography on studies that deal with CMC punctuation, especially for what concerns the Italian language.
Keyword: CMC; Linguistica dei media; Linguistica italiana; Punteggiatura
