German Novelists of the Weimar Republic: Intersections of Literature and Politics
Abstract:
This edited volume of commissioned essays in the important Studies in German Literature, Linguistics and Culture series contains essays by leading authorities in the field. Its focus is on the relationship of the major writers with political and social events. The editor’s own contributions consist of two elements: an introduction (pp.1-17) which provides an overview of the political, social, cultural and artistic developments in the Weimar Republic and a chapter on Jakob Wassermann (85-99). The latter is an original contribution inasmuch as it brings together consideration of Wassermann’s novels with his non-literary writings, and highlights key features of Wassermann’s involvement in social debates about marriage and divorce
