Applying and expanding role and reference grammar
Abstract: Role and Reference Grammar is a contemporary theory of grammar that seeks to provide an integrated account of grammar, meaning and function, while at the same time aiming for typological adequacy. One of its central claims is that syntax is motivated to a great extent by semantic, pragmatic, and cognitive factors. The theory has been applied to a remarkably wide range of grammatical phenomena and languages. The present volume presents research in Role and Reference Grammar covering topics such as Aktionsart alternations, the scope and layering of operators, verb semantics and argument structure, and the semantic-pragmatic motivation of syntactic structures in both simple and complex sentences. The papers demonstrate the descriptive potential of the theory and, at the same time, put some of its claims to the test. In addition, the volume contains computational approaches which aim to take RRG beyond theory.
