Abstract:
Although in their basic framework Nazi anti-Semitic and racist ideology and policies were not grounded in science, scientists not only supported them in various ways, but also took advantage of them, for example by using the new possibilities of unethical experimentation in humans that these ideologies provided. Scientists’ complicity with Nazi ideology and politics does, however, not mean that all sciences in Nazi Germany were ideologically tainted. I argue, rather, that despite the fact that some areas of science continued at high levels, science in Nazi Germany was most negatively affected not by the imposition of Nazi ideology on the conduct of science but by the enactment of legal measures that ensured the expulsion of Jewish scientists. The anti-Semitism of young faculty and students was particularly virulent. Moreover, I show that scientists supported Nazi ideologies and policies not only through so-called reductionist science such as eugenics and race-hygiene, but also by promoting organicist and holistic ideologies of the racial state. ; Encara que el marc bàsic de la ideologia nazi i de les seues polítiques antisemites no es fonamentava en la ciència, els científics no solament els van donar suport de diverses maneres sinó que van aprofitar l’oportunitat que els oferien per a, per exemple, experimentar de manera poc ètica amb humans. No obstant això, la complicitat dels científics amb la ideologia i la política nazi no implica que totes les ciències de l’Alemanya nazi estigueren ideològicament contaminades. En aquest article sostinc que, malgrat que algunes disciplines van continuar a un gran nivell, el que va afectar de manera més negativa la ciència de l’Alemanya nazi no va ser la imposició de la ideologia nazi en el procés científic, sinó l’aprovació de mesures legals per a executar l’expulsió dels científics jueus. L’antisemitisme dels joves acadèmics i estudiants va ser especialment agressiu. A més, en aquest document mostre que els científics van donar suport a les ideologies i les polítiques nazis no solament mitjançant el que es coneix com a ciència reduccionista, amb àrees com l’eugenèsia o la higiene racial, sinó també promovent ideologies organicistes i holístiques sobre l’estat racial. ; Aunque el marco básico de la ideología nazi y de sus políticas antisemitas no estaba fundamentado en la ciencia, los científicos no solo les apoyaron de varias maneras, sino que aprovecharon la oportunidad que les ofrecían para, por ejemplo, experimentar de forma poco ética con humanos. Sin embargo, la complicidad de los científicos con la ideología y la política nazi no implica que todas las ciencias de la Alemania nazi estuvieran ideológicamente contaminadas. En este artículo sostengo que, pese a que algunas disciplinas continuaron a un gran nivel, lo que afectó de manera más negativa a la ciencia de la Alemania nazi no fue la imposición de la ideología nazi en el proceso científico, sino la aprobación de medidas legales para ejecutar la expulsión de los científicos judíos. El antisemitismo de los jóvenes académicos y estudiantes fue especialmente agresivo. Además, en este documento muestro que los científicos apoyaron las ideologías y las políticas nazis no solo mediante lo que se conoce como ciencia reduccionista, con áreas como la eugenesia o la higiene racial, sino también promoviendo ideologías organicistas y holísticas sobre el estado racial.
