Abstract:
International audience ; In this article, we extend the notion of chain of reference to multimodal spoken interaction, within the context of linguistic tandems, which can be a source of referential instability. Based on the qualitative analysis of two interaction sequences, we show how chains of reference unfold combining speech and gesture. To refine the notion of gesture reiteration, we rely on formal approaches so as to decompose gestures into collections of features (localization, configuration, orientation, movement, but also duration, speed and amplitude) in order to describe the reduction and expansion of gesture reiterations. Reduced gesture reiterations can be considered as resulting from a process of conventionalization at the scale of the sequence. Like proforms in speech, they reflect the referent’s accessibility and information status. The expansion of a reiterated gesture is used to elaborate on, or requalify a referent. It mobilizes the gesture as a part of a public substrate of reusable, decomposable and transformable resources for the co-construction of meaning in interaction.
