Identification of Ontologies
In: http://iaks-www.ira.uka.de/iaks-calmet/papers/Id_Ontologies.pdf
Abstract: The concept of ontology is nowadays routinely found as a substitute to the concept of knowledge. It is usually defined as some kind of taxonomy or even more crudely as a list of words describing some specific domain knowledge. In fact, a proper definition of ontology implies that the knowledge is structured, which is also consistent with the usual concept first introduced by philosophers. In knowledge engineering structured knowledge is a well-understood concept that means the existence of a welldefined data structure to represent knowledge. A common use of ontology covers for example simple hierarchies in the case of taxonomies. We propose a methodology to identify structured knowledge as ontologies that is based upon the concept of entropy and its associated distance, i.e. the Kullback-Leibler distance or mutual information. At the heart of such a methodology is the probability of distribution of states that define the knowledge for a given application field. This indeed subsumes a specific concept of distance on the ontology. The first approach presented in this paper either identifies a new structure or extends an existing structure on a taxonomy. By opposition to Resnik's similarity measure, that is used in computational linguistics, we do not consider the distribution of large corpora of text or any document at all. We simply impose or propose "by hand" a distribution of the terms in the taxonomy. This distribution depends on the constraints we set for the meaning of the considered ontology. In a previous paper [1] an extension of the concept of distance, arising from entropy, to ontology was already described but without proposing a general methodology to identify ontologies.
