Abstract:
This thesis contributes to the study of the relations of possession and of verbless phrases in the Arabic dialect of Benghazi, Libya, based on the analysis of an oral corpus gathered from speakers in Benghazi. The thesis takes a typological approach to the study of possession while also drawing on studies of individual Arabic dialects, looking in particular at the so-called periphrastic constructions of possession which have possessive or relational meaning. Possessive constructions in this work are divided into three categories under the syntactic-semantic constraints of word order and determination: genitive constructions, or construct state; predicative possession, i.e. “to have”; and dative possession, i.e. “to be to (someone)”. For genitive possession, the investigation shows that both synthetic and analytic constructions are in use in the Benghazi dialect but do not express identical notions of possession, and use of one or the other construction depends on formal, narrative, and pragmatic factors. Moreover, the analytic construction using the relator mtāʕ is shown to have an important role in the dialect’s grammar. The verbless phrases examined in the thesis include the pseudo-verbs ʕind, fī, bī and mʕa for predicative possession and the particles lī and ʃōr for dative possession. The study of such phrases indicates an affinity between locative, existential, and possessive constructions and demonstrates the evolution of the particular forms employed in such phrases. ; Cette thèse porte sur l’étude des relations de possession et sur les énoncés non verbaux dans le dialecte libyen de Benghazi. Il s’agit d’une étude analytique basée sur un corpus oral collecté auprès de locuteurs benghaziens. Dans le cadre de cette recherche, des théories typologiques réalisées sur la possession et des travaux sur la dialectologie arabe nous serviront de points d’appui. Les constructions en avoir dans les langues du monde présentent des valeurs possessives ou relationnelles dites « périphrastiques ».Les constructions possessives sont présentées, dans ce travail, en trois types : constructions génitives ‘état-construit’, prédication possessive ‘avoir’ et possession dative ‘être à’, sous une contrainte syntaxico-sémantique : ordre des mots, détermination. Nos résultats montrent que les constructions synthétique et analytique sont en usage dans le parler de Benghazi et qu’elles n’expriment pas les mêmes notions de possession. Le recours à ces constructions dépend de facteurs formels, narratifs et pragmatiques. La construction analytique est marquée par l’emploi du relateur mtāʕ qui montre une évolution majeure dans le dialecte.Les énoncés non verbaux exposés dans notre recherche sont exprimés par les pseudo-verbes ʕind, fī, bī et mʕa, pour la prédication possessive, et par les particules lī, ʃōr, pour la construction dative. L’étude de ces énoncés montre qu’il existe une affinité entre les constructions locatives, existentielles et possessives. Ces éléments encodent des notions possessives différentes, aliénable et inaliénable. En plus de la possession, ils ont la capacité de présenter des valeurs communes comme les valeurs expérientielles (ʕind, fī, bī et ṣāħib), attributives (ʕind, fī, bī, ʃōr, mʕa, ṣāħib), ainsi que des valeurs modales, modalité déontique et de prise en charge.
