O inglês no mundo: o pluricentrismo linguístico no 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico
Abstract: As exigências do mundo globalizado originaram grandes fluxos migratórios e marcaram as sociedades modernas com a diversidade. The demands of the globalized world gave rise to large migratory flows and compelled diversity to modern societies. These multilingual and multicultural contexts have challenged societies and are reflected in schools. To respond to them, the school has to show itself as an inclusive space, open to diversity. In this sense, we designed this study, in the paradigm of linguistic diversity and its main objective was to understand how we can make children aware of the diversity in languages, namely the phenomenon of linguistic pluricentricity, through the introduction of different varieties of English, that is, World Englishes. In order to meet our study’s goal, we developed a didactic intervention project, designated Englishes around the globe, developed in the 2020/2021 school year, in a third grade English class. For our study, anchored in the qualitative research-action paradigm, data were collected through worksheets, questionnaire surveys, direct observations and video recordings of the classes. The analysis and interpretation of our data allowed us to conclude that the children developed knowledge regarding linguistic diversity in the world. They revealed awareness of the existing plurality in the English language communication space and showed understanding that languages change when in different contexts and in contact with other languages, inferring that this pluricentricity is transversal to other languages. This study also showed that encouraging the development of a plurilingual competence, through the contact with other languages, gives children an advantage in interacting with the diversity of contemporary societies. ; Mestrado em Ensino de Inglês no 1º Ciclo do Ensino Básico
