The Effects of Language Aptitude on L2 Development in Young Learners
Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to explore the role of language aptitude on English vocabulary learning through the reading of graded readers with young learners. A study was conducted in a primary school of Lleida with a sample of 23 students from grade 5 (eleven years old). Aptitude was measured through the MLAT-EC test (Suárez, 2010) and vocabulary was measured through a vocabulary matching test. In order to conduct this study, the researcher explained the graded reader to the students with the help of a PowerPoint that contained some images from the book, and afterwards, students read it while they listened at its audio file at the same time. Finally, participants’ gains on L2 vocabulary were analysed through a vocabulary test administered in three occasions. The results indicate that aptitude seems to play a decisive role in L2 vocabulary learning of young learners, since those learners with a higher score in the MLAT-EC showed a considerable improvement regarding vocabulary gains in L2.
