"Der Aufsatz zeigt, dass die Generation der 68er sich rund um einen Initiationsmythos definiert, der sich auf die Ermordung Benno Ohnesorgs und dem an die Pathosformel der Pièta erinnernden Bildzeugnis dieses Ereignisses fokussiert sowie auf die Ikone Rudi Dutschke (und seinen Ringelpullover) und auf das Attentat auf den Studentenführerführer, das beide zu Märtyrern machte. Die (Selbst-)Mythisierungen und die Mechanismen, in denen sich die kollektive Identität dieser Generation ausprägt, die Rolle von Kultbüchern, etwa Camus' L'Étranger, Glaubens- und Glücksansprüche sowie die Etablierung eines ideologisch definierten neuen Vokabulars und neuer Mytheme bzw. der Adaptation alter Mytheme zeigen sich in der Analyse der Romane Uwe Timms und seiner essayistischen Erzählung Der Freund und der Fremde sowie einer Reihe anderer autobiographisch inspirierter Werke, Interviews und Zeitzeugnisse von Birgit Vanderbeke, Karin Struck, Bernward Vesper, Fritz Zorn und anderen. Neben der totalitären Gegenwelt, die Stephan Wackwitz desillusioniert in Neue Menschen vorstellt, rechnet auch Sophie Dannenberg in der satirischen Dekonstruktion Das kalte Herz der Revolution mit der Elterngeneration der 68 ab." (Autorenreferat) ; "The essay illustrates that the German 60s' generations, most specifically the 68'ers, have defined themselves on a fundamental myth of initiation, inspired by the assassination of Benno Ohnesorg, which is remembered in the pieta-like photo of his death, and the attempted assassination of Rudi Dutschke, icon of the student rebellion and leader of the SDS in his famous homemade striped pullover - making both of them martyrs of the movement. These mystifications and self-mystifications as well as the mechanisms which shaped the collective identity of the whole generation, the influence of key books such as Albert Camus' L'Etranger the establishment of a new ideology through language, and the adaptation of new, mostly recycled myth and mythical elements can be identified in a critical reading of Uwe Timm’s works and his narrative essay Der Freund und der Fremde as well as a series of other novels, interviews, and biographical insights, by Birgit Vanderbeke, Karin Struck, Bernward Vesper, Fritz Zorn and others. More fundamental forms of critique, such as Stephan Wackwitz’ complete disillusionment in Neue Menschen and Sophie Dannenberg’s deconstructive satire Das kalte Herz der Revolution complete this analysis of modern German myths of 1968."
