How Advanced EFL Taiwanese Learners Infer Meanings of Unknown Words While Reading
楊尚霖. - : 屏東市:國立屏東大學, 2015
Abstract: Word-meaning inference is a method that English learners frequently applied in reading. The present study revealed different knowledge sources and strategies use while encountering unknown words in reading. Two advanced EFL Taiwanese learners participated in and their word inference data was collected. The findings showed these two participants used various kinds of knowledge sources and strategies in word-meaning guessing. However, the learner with lower English reading proficiency relied heavily on linguistic knowledge and ignorance strategy. The participant with higher English reading proficiency applied different kinds of knowledge and strategies and led to more successful word-meaning inferences. It is suggested that teachers should help learners to use various sources of information and provide different strategies to do word-meaning inference when they encounter unknown words in reading.
