Abstract: Theoretical accounts of historical heterogeneity alongside models of the social function of HF-HRV provide intuitive reasoning for why historical heterogeneity should be related to HF-HRV. Historical heterogeneity is an indicator of the degree to which people from diverse social, ethnic, racial, and linguistic backgrounds formed part of a country’s population over the course of 500 years. Individuals in historically heterogeneous societies are more frequently exposed to interpersonal challenges because they have fewer shared social norms and expectations. Interpersonal challenges include exposure to individuals who look and act different from them, regulator use of eye contact, and transparent expressions of emotion. Thus, individuals living in historically heterogeneous societies are required to deal with evolutionarily challenging social interactions in order to live successfully in their social environment.
