Abstract:
Based on a literature review that includes social theory, sociolinguistic theory and studies on sociolinguistic perception linked to gender and sexuality, the use of intersectionality as an analytical sociolinguistic device is defended. The origins of intersectionality, which refer to social movements in the 1960s and 1970s and to legal law theories, are outlined. Also, different intersectional approaches are discussed. Three sociolinguistic experiments that explore perceptions linked to gender and sexuality and whose analysis are in line with intersectionality are exposed, as well as the advantages presented by this analytical approach. At the end, the importance of dynamically viewing social categories and contextual factors in order to comprehend the social meaning of sociolinguistic variables is emphasized.
