; The following research aims to indicate the importance of history from the analysis of a fictional universe in which it does not exist: the one created in 1949 by George Orwell in the book Nineteen Eighty-Four. After making a historic approach of the literary movements known as utopian and dystopian of the end of the nineteenth century and beginning of the twentieth century – as well as bringing attention to the author's trajectory, as an intellectual of his time, and also as an active subject in the political discussions and problematizations of the 1920s and 1940s –, this work focuses on the ways with which, in the fictional universe and the world thematized by it, the physical and mental control is made possible through: a) the absence of history and b) by certain existent aspects in totalitarian governments. Supported in theoretical and reflexive ways by the philosophic constructions of Hannah Arendt and Paul Ricoeur, this work indicates these aspects as being, among others, the linguistic pruning, the application of ideology to politics, and the narrative control. Therefore, through the perspectives made possible by the literary work and by the political and philosophic essays, we propose that, for Orwell, the human being's freedom of creative thought is deeply connected to its ability to situate itself in time.
