Invariance in argument realization: The case of Iroquoian. Unpublished ms
In: http://makino.linguist.univ-paris-diderot.fr/files/hpsg2010/file/abstracts/HPSG/koenig-michelson-hpsg2010.pdf (2009)
Abstract: This paper is concerned with what is invariant in the expression of arguments in languages as diverse as Oneida (a polysynthetic Northern Iroquoian language) and English. The short, somewhat provocative, answer to this question that we propose here is nothing. In particular, we argue that, in contrast to most languages, there is no need for valence lists recording local syntactic dependencies in Iroquoian. A level of arg-st is all that is needed to model the various “adjunctive ” dependencies between verbs (or nouns) and syntactically optional phrases that co-occur with them. Our work provides important support for Manning and Sag’s (1998) suggestion that the relation between the arg-st list and the various valence lists can be more complex than just an append relation. Manning and Sag discuss some of the advantages of allowing more complex relations between the arg-st list and valence lists in modeling, e.g., pro-drop or syntactically ergative languages. The distinction between arg-st and valence lists has also been shown to be useful in modeling subtle differences in argument composition in French (Abeille ́ et al. (1998)), or in developing a traceless model of extraction (Bouma et al. (2001)). Our claim that Oneida lexical entries do not include valence lists illustrates a more radical dissociation between argument-structure and valence information: In at least some polysynthetic languages, verbs or nouns do not include
